Making remote operations visible
Noble Corporation depends on satellite communications for their offshore rigs. To stream their live video to shore we implemented our dedicated edge-to-cloud CCTV solution.
Noble Corporation operates 25 offshore drilling rigs. Their main goal with this project is to maximize the fleet’s operational performance. Local crews operate the remote platforms, but centralized support by management is required. This requires sufficient visual context from live video. Noble asked us to configure, implement and support a remote CCTV monitoring solution for their offshore drilling rigs.
There are two main challenges to remotely monitoring live operations via video: connectivity and security
Remote operations communicate with land via satellite connectivity to land. Satellite communication has a limited bandwidth and high latency. Standard monitoring solutions are not successful. Advanced compression is required to reduce the bandwidth consumption to around 100 kbit/s for 8 cameras at a framerate of at least 5fps.
Security is key with operational data. Data transfer and storage require the highest possible security standards. Obviously, access needs to be granted to multiple user groups. This means people internal to the Noble organization as well as managers within the organization of Noble’s client.
Combining dedicated hardware, optimized video streams, and Azure cloud technology, we developed a lightweight remote monitoring solution. An offshore CCTV monitoring server records and stores high-resolution streams locally and livestreams optimized resolution video. The optimized resolution stream is then stored in an MS Azure cloud environment.
Our remote CCTV monitoring solution improves the efficiency and safety of Noble’s offshore operations by sharing knowledge and experience over their whole fleet of rigs. This is an essential tool that allows them to be visually in control of their remote assets, from any location, at any time.
